They do not simply accept assertions from sponsors, but require rigorously designed studies to collect objective and impartial results. This helps to build trust in these products and in the companies that produce them, encouraging further innovation and investment. Additionally, by requiring clinical trials and other forms of testing, regulators help to identify potential risks and side effects before technologies are made available to the public, ensuring that they are safe and effective. By promoting safety, the regulators help to create an environment that is supportive of innovation, allowing companies and researchers to develop new products and technologies that can improve health and well-being. Additionally researchers are required to fully disclose conflicts of interest including support from company sponsors. Through transparency and by balancing the need for safety with the need for innovation, regulations play a crucial role in promoting public health and advancing scientific discovery.

Throughout history, there have been many technological advancements that have had unintended negative impacts on the environment. For example, the widespread use of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, has led to significant increases in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, contributing to global climate change and respiratory problems. The use of pesticides and other chemicals in agriculture has contaminated soil and water and has led to the decline of many species of birds and insects. Deforestation and habitat destruction, often driven by industrial activities, has led to the loss of biodiversity and the destruction of valuable ecosystems. The production and disposal of electronic waste, or e-waste, is also a growing problem, as many toxic materials used in these products can harm the environment and human health. These examples demonstrate that while technology can provide numerous benefits, it is important to be aware of its potential negative impacts and to take steps to minimize them.

Randomized clinical trials were developed as a way to manage the risks associated with new drugs and to ensure their safety and efficacy before they are made available to the general public. Notably the cost of wind farm construction has risen about 10% in recent years while the cost of utility scale solar has fallen by 8%. It is also important to consider the potential for the turbines to interfere with shipping lanes and fishing activities, as well as the potential impact on local communities and wind cycles such as the Gulf Stream. Until more is known about the environmental impact of offshore wind farms, it is important to proceed with caution and to invest in further research and studies to determine the full extent of their potential risks and benefits.

Questions have been raised about the impact on marine life, particularly regarding the increasing number of whales that have been found dying off US shores. Calls are being made for more studies and investigations before the proposed largest and densest number windmills is approved and proceed to construction off the East Coast. There are obviously strong voices on both sides of the debate. We applaud and embrace widespread responsible efforts for clean energy. But the key point remains regarding whether there has been adequate study of potential impact.

We should fully support innovation in medicine as well as energy. Investigational products and technologies funded by corporate sponsors should continue to be thoroughly and objectively tested for safety and efficacy prior to approval, and these standards need to apply both to pharmaceuticals as well as widespread construction of any novel clean energy.
